On Sat June 2nd 2018 the ordination of Gerry Malone to the permanent diaconate took place in the Pro Cathedral. Many parishioners from Blessington, Valleymount and Lacken travelled to Dublin for the beautiful and moving ceremony. Gerry was one of four Deacons ordained on the day for the Dublin diocese.
There were masses celebrated in Blessington and Valleymount to mark the occasion where Gerry gave the homily. Fr. Teddy Downes attended the reception in Valleymount to the delight of his former parishioners.
It was Fr.Teddy who initially sowed the seed of Gerry's vocation and who with Fr. Richard Behan in Blessington encouraged him to answer God's call to be the first married Deacon for West Wicklow.
We wish Gerry every blessing and good health as he takes up his new ministry in the parish.
Among the areas where he will preside will be assisting at the celebration of the Eucharist, Funerals, celebrate Baptisms, visit the sick and bereaved, Youth ministry and encourage Lay Ministries in the Church.
Archbishop Diarmuid Martin in his homily said that the ordination of the Deacons is "not simply a measure to address the falling number of priests. It is to reflect the true nature of the church as a community of the missionary disciples of Jesus, working together".
"The ministry of the Deacon is a ministry of service. A ministry of service is not simply about doing things, it is about becoming identified in one's entire being with the Jesus who serves".
