Farewell to Fr. Teddy downes
On Sunday Oct 29th our beloved priest Fr. Teddy Downes retired from Valleymount / Lacken parish having ministered among us for almost 10 years. Bishop Eamonn Walsh celebrated the mass of Thanksgiving which included Parish priest Fr Richard Behan , Fr Noel Campbell and our Deacon in formation Gerry Malone.
Symbols of Fr Teddy's life were brought up in the opening procession,
Potted plants - nurturing the faith of our children.
Stole - gift of his priesthood.
Jubilee Book - Celebrating 50 years of ministry
Novel - Love of reading and happy hours with his Book Club.
Flowers - Love of nature and beauty of the countryside.
Selection Box - Generosity to the Altar servers.
Groups from the parish participated in the Liturgy - Sacristans, Parish Pastoral Council Members, Readers, Collectors, Eucharistic ministers, Baptismal Team, Children from local schools and the GAA. The liturgy was greatly enhanced with the Hill Family playing the keyboard and flute. Patsy Flanagan played the tin whistle.
Harry Farrington gave a poignant rendition of "Among the Wicklow Hills" so loved by Fr Teddy as he regularly enjoyed an afternoon walk in our picturesque parish.
The mass was followed by a presentation and refreshments in the Community hall and it afforded Fr Teddy the opportunity to say goodbye to the large number of parishioners present for the occasion.
We wish Fr Teddy many years of health, contentment and fulfilment as he retires to Sybil Hill Raheny.
